This season’s Toronto runways saw fashion meet fast food, embellishment, tailored coats and lots of fur.
VAWK designer, Sunny Fong, teamed up with Subway Restaurant for his Fall/Winter (F/W) collection. His show began with the Subway logo adorned on the wall, followed by the logo stitched across the tops of his models. A collective favourite was the “lettuce dress,” that looked like the model was emerging from the head of romaine.
The actual VAWK collection was Sunny Fong’s DOT du JOURS collection inspired by the animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. There were vibrant colours and flirty silhouettes. Designers heartily embraced colour in their collections.
The week also celebrated the 20th anniversary of fashion veteran David Dixon. His Joan of Arc inspired collection was true to the edgy and feminine style he spent his entire career perfecting.
It was a great showcase of Canadian fashion.
Kerry Washington had a winning night at the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. The actress really can do everything. She’s got beauty, talent, and brains and succeeds in everything she does.
GLAAD gives media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting LGBT equality and acceptance. Kerry was presented with the Vanguard Award. She could have given the typical acceptance speech, but instead opted to share an inspirational message.
She said, “because, on Monday morning, people are going to click a link to hear what the woman from Scandal said at that award show, and so, I think some stuff needs to be said.” This prompted a round of applause before she continues her talk.
Her speech touched on racism, LGBT issues, and gender equality. She devoted her time on stage to talk about equal rights for citizens and how to make that a reality in the media.
She noted that “women, poor people, people of colour, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people…have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of other.”
Kerry believes that the stories of sidelined people need to be told in order to prevent this from happening in the real world and on-screen.
The best of the best in music walked the red carpet last night at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Whiile we couldn’t wait to see performances by Sam Smith, Kanye, and Beyonce, the biggest night in music brought out the industry’s best in fashion’s finest.
Katy Perry kept it understated in a short, sparkly number, and left it to her purple hair to make the statement.

Iggy’s hair wasn’t the only disappointment this year. Many award hopefuls went home empty-handed, due to one man stealing the show: Sam Smith.
Rihanna is making fashion history with Dior. She is set to become the fashion houses first ever black spokesmodel. Rihanna will be the leading lady in the fourth instalment of Dior’s “Secret Garden” video series, which is scheduled to run in film and print this spring.

The new Miss Universe has been crowned. Paulina Vega - Miss Colombia - beat out 87 contenders at the wold’s top beauty competition. Vega is the second beauty queen from Colombia to win the title. The last time Colombia brought home the crown was in 1956.
Miss Universe contestants compete with the hope to advance their careers and improve the lives of others, making it more than just a beauty pageant.
